WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?
Access Vertigo is available to participants on a case-by-case basis, including wheelchair users who meet the requirements below.
An Allen’s Cognitive Level of 3 is required to participate in the dining experience. Participants with significant intellectual disabilities must undergo a cognitive screening by an Occupational Therapist to determine eligibility.
See below to identify which chair is most suitable for your experience.
ABOUT THE CHAIRS
Two kinds of chairs have been developed as part of Access Vertigo: the “66” Chair and the Folding Chair.
“66” Chair
Designed for participants who require some support while sitting. Participants must have good head control and some upper limb function.
Folding Chair
This chair features a rigid lower frame with a folding upper frame and is suitable for participants who:
- Require head support or have no/low head control
- Need a high level of support while sitting
- Have limited or no upper limb strength and function
- Have little to no trunk control
CAN PEOPLE WITH SPINAL CORD INJURIES PARTICIPATE?
Participants with a Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) must wait 6 to 12 months after their injury before taking part.
SCI is often a traumatic injury, and the bones and tissues of the spine need time to heal before engaging in extreme sports and experiences. You are welcome to participate once your treating doctor has provided medical clearance.
IS IT SAFE?
Access Vertigo has been developed in consultation with Sporting Wheelies and other accessibility experts. The custom-made wheelchair, crafted from aircraft-grade aluminium, is safely winched up to the dining platform.
All participants watch a safety briefing video, which demonstrates how to correctly fit the harness on their chair and shows the lifting and lowering process for each chair type.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Before arriving at Vertigo, you will be asked to complete a questionnaire outlining your specific abilities and what is most comfortable for you.
Your responses will help determine the safest and most suitable method for transferring from your own chair to the Access Vertigo chair. Vertigo is equipped with a sling system, allowing transfers in a private room or with the assistance of Vertigo staff. Once seated, you are securely harnessed to the chair.
From there, your chair is winched up to the Vertigo platform, offering breathtaking views of Brisbane’s skyline as you ascend. At the table, your chair is locked into place, and your dining partner joins you. Safety is our priority: the chair is always supported by a backup system, and the wheels remain securely locked throughout the experience.
There are two wheelchair access options, depending on each guest’s level of physical ability:
Option 1: Wheelchair Access – Low to Moderate Assistance
Guests with low to moderate disabilities who require wheeled mobility may dine using the “66 Chair”. Participants are lifted via wheelchair to the dining platform, suspended 17 metres above the ground.
Option 2: Wheelchair Access – High Level of Assistance
Guests who require a high level of assistance may dine using the Folding Chair. Participants are lifted via wheelchair to the dining platform, suspended 17 metres above the ground.
HOW DO I BOOK?
Bookings are made by contacting [email protected] and completing the Access Vertigo questionnaire.
WHO CAN I DINE WITH?
Your dining partner cannot be a wheelchair user, but they will be seated with you at the Access Vertigo table.
CAN I ABSEIL OFF AT THE END?
Your Access Vertigo experience includes both an ascent and a descent along the side of the Brisbane Powerhouse, allowing you to enjoy two unique perspectives of the skyline.
WHAT OTHER DISABILITIES ARE PLANNED FOR ACCESS VERTIGO?
